Language of Instruction

Medical education in Romania lasts 6 years (360 ECTS). International applicants may choose from three language tracks:

    The most popular choice for international students. Curriculum follows European and US standards.

  • French

    Preferred by students from France, Belgium and North Africa. Available at Cluj and Iași.

  • Romanian

    After a 1-year preparatory course; the most affordable tuition option.

Admission is based on a file/dossier evaluation, not a centralised entrance exam.

Non-EU Students: D/SD Student Visa Document Checklist & Process

After receiving your Letter of Acceptance, follow these steps carefully:

    Issued personally by the Romanian Ministry of Education. Required for visa application.

    Student Visa (D/SD)

    Apply at the Romanian consulate with: first-year tuition paid, ~€500/month (€3,000/year) financial proof, criminal record and health insurance.

    Residence Permit (Permis de Ședere)

    Within 90 days of arrival, apply at the Immigration Office (IGI) for a temporary residence card.

Required Documents

All documents must be translated into Romanian, English or French, notarised and apostilled.

  • Diploma & Transcript

    High school diploma and full transcript (Biology, Chemistry and Physics grades must be clearly shown).

  • Language Proficiency

    IELTS (min. 6.0) or TOEFL (min. 80) for English programmes. No certificate? You may sit a university exemption exam.

  • Passport & Birth Certificate

    Passport valid for at least 6 months and a multilingual Birth Certificate (Form A).

  • Medical Certificate

    Official board report confirming no physical or psychiatric conditions or infectious diseases preventing medical study.

Different Process for EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals hold the same academic rights as Romanian citizens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Romanian medical degree recognised in the EU and Turkey (YÖK)?

Yes. As an EU member state, Romanian degrees are recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. For Turkey: Romanian universities are on the YÖK recognised institutions list; however, direct equivalency (denklik) is not automatic for all medical faculties. Candidates must contact YÖK directly during the application period. Eligibility for the TUS exam is granted based on the official YÖK decision.

Is there an entrance exam?

No centralised entrance exam exists. Admission is purely file-based, primarily evaluated on Biology and Chemistry high school grades.

Do I need to know Romanian before I start?

No prior Romanian is needed. English and French-track students attend Romanian language classes at the university during the first two years, building communication skills for clinical rotations from year 4 naturally and gradually.

How long does the degree take?

Medicine (MD) and Dentistry: 6 years. Pharmacy: 5 years. An optional Romanian preparatory year adds 1 extra year.

What are the living costs in Romania?

In major cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca or Iași, monthly costs (rent, food, transport) average €600 – €900 — roughly half the cost of Western Europe.

When do applications open?

Can I practise medicine in Romania after graduation?

Yes. Register with the Romanian College of Physicians (CMR) to practise in Romania or any EU country. A separate residency exam (rezidențiat) is required for specialisation training.

Recognition of a Romanian Medical Diploma

Romania is an EU member state, so a Romanian medical degree is recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. Outside the EU, recognition is a separate procedure run by your own country’s authority — this is the document trail that procedure asks for.

  • Diploma de licență — the medical degree certificate, legalised with the Hague apostille.
  • Foaie matricolă / situația școlară — the complete academic transcript, apostilled with the diploma.
  • A sworn translation of both documents into the language of the receiving authority.
  • Passport and identity documents, plus proof of the study period — the enrolment certificate for each academic year.

The receiving authority decides. Romanian universities appear on the recognised-institution lists of the main authorities, but recognition is not automatic for every faculty, and the authority may require additional steps or an examination depending on its assessment — confirm the current rules with it for your intake year.
